This week's thought is from Sempai Dennis Flynn
Cocoa Shorin-Ryu Karate Dojo,
Protecting Yourself When You Chamber
I learned a lot from the classes I attended during the Florida Weekend Event. One of those things I will be working on is making sure I protect myself when chambering prior to an offensive or defensive move.
All of our chambering positions that we do just prior to the block or strike require the use of both arms and hands. We position them in such a way as to protect the most vulnerable parts of our bodies, such as the face, ribs, organs, etc.
Cheating the chamber, or not fully chambering, is something I often see in most students. If not corrected, habits can form that can be quite challenging to break.
In my dojo, I am going to pay a little more attention to this technique as well as some other key learning I got from this past weekend.
