Onegai-shimasu Hanshi, Kyoshi, Sensei, and all SRKUSA Deshi:

Please review the following regarding the chambering of the hands in the first two moves of Pinan Yondan.

A common error for deshi learning this kata is to chamber the hand performing the chest block much too low.

The hand performing the chest block in each of the first two moves must be chambered in the same position it would be when performing the open hand chest blocks as executed in Pinan Shodan. This means the chest block hand must be chambered with the wrist at shoulder level.

In the first move it is the left hand that is chambered in this way. In the second move it would be the right hand.

These chambers make it possible to perform a powerful chest block with the “Chudan” hand driving slightly downward on the incoming punch.

For the proper visual please review Hanshi executing these chest blocks in Pinan Yondan on the Kata Guide 2000 DVD.
