Opening a Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate USA dojo or club

Onegai shimasu Hanshi, Kyoshi, Sensei and fellow Deshi,

Opening a Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate USA dojo or club is something that
Hanshi and the Kyoshi talk about often at karate events. We the students
of USRKUSA are charged with the mission to propagate our art. Our mission
statement reads:

"To propagate the art of Shorin-Ryu Karate USA, its kata and techniques,
as handed down by our founder Grand Master Ansei Ueshiro. To preserve and
protect the history, traditions, methods and integrity of SRKUSA. To
develop students of any age to their maximum potential in body, mind and
spirit; through courtesy, propriety, self-discipline and the ecstasy of
hard work fostered by our dojo - the training halls - of Shorin-Ryu Karate

To that end I would like to salute Shihan Emiliano Mazlen of the Boston
Chinatown Dojo for his quiet and humble work in running his dojo for the
last 15 years. This dojo has been holding down the far Northeastern
section of the United States without fanfare, class after class, year
after year. This is truly a remarkable feat.

I’m sure Sensei Mazlen and other Shihan would tell you that running a dojo
is not always easy or exciting. It is hard work. I know they would also
tell you it is truly rewarding to see your students slowly but surely
progress through the ranks as deshi, and through their lives as

I am beginning to learn this first hand having recently opened the Bay
Ridge Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate Dojo in Brooklyn, NY, close to where
Hanshi Scaglione grew up. We held a special open house on October 19th
with Kyoshi Mackay, Sensei and other Black Belts from Midtown honoring me
with their presence. I hope to follow in Shihan Mazlen’s footsteps as
well as the other countless Shinden, Shihan and Sensei that have gone
before. The best way to show your support for those running a dojo is to
visit one near you, or perhaps even far away.

"Just do it!" - Hanshi Scaglione

"Karate is not something you do, Karate is what you are." - Kyoshi Sal
